  • BINGHAMTON - SWS Inc. (The Sheltered Workshop for the Disabled) announced that it has received nearly $5 million in 2008/2009 contracts to supply electronic cable harnesses for use in the building of New York City Subway Cars supplied by the Alstom Corporation in Hornell, NY.

    President/CEO Ronald S. Charsky said, “SWS Inc. is optimistic that New York City will continue to plan for further replacement of the earlier model cars, and we will continue to support AlstomTransportation-Hornell as we have with the current requirements.”

    Charsky also said, “The contracts represent a significant milestone for SWS Inc. which has targeted the Mass Transportation Market as a strategic growth opportunity.”

    According to Charsky the new contracts will be handled with additional hiring of selective technical skills to compliment their current workforce.

    The Company employs over 300 people currently.

    Since 1942 SWS Inc. has provided local employment opportunities and services for disabled as well as non-disabled workers in the tri-county area.

  • BINGHAMTON – Able Industries Inc. announced it has received a contract for janitorial services through the New York State Industries for the Disabled, Inc. (NYSID) valued at $3 million over the next three years. In addition, a second janitorial contract with the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) has been awarded to Able Industries, Inc. valued at more than $750,000 over the next 5 years.

    Able Industries, Inc., a not for profit company, is a business affiliate with SWS Inc. (The Sheltered Workshop for the Disabled), both are located at 200 Court Street in Binghamton, NY.

    The Agencies have awarded the Court Street company $3.75 million in contracts to provide janitorial services to the Whitney Point Rest Area, Kirkwood Rest Area, the Owego Developmental Disabilities Services Office (DDSO), and the Binghamton Federal Building.

    As a result, Charsky said the company will maintain a staff of disabled and non-disabled employees with an opportunity to increase locations in the future and thus requiring additional hiring.

    The company currently employs 33 people, Charsky said.
